Handbiking in Nature: How I Recharge for a New Week
After a busy work week, there’s one thing I really need: getting outside. Clearing my head, moving my body and enjoying nature. For me, handbiking in nature is the perfect way to do that.
As soon as the weather allows it, I attach my handbike to my O4 wheelchair and head out. Away from my laptop, into the fresh air and simply enjoying everything that’s happening outside.
The freedom of handbiking
Handbiking gives me an incredible sense of freedom. It’s a way to stay active, explore my surroundings and clear my mind at the same time.
Luckily, the Netherlands has many beautiful cycling paths. Through nature areas, along the water or simply through green landscapes. During these rides I always notice how good it feels to step away from the daily routine.
What really helps is having a wheelchair that fits well. My O4 wheelchair gives me exactly the support my body needs. The support in my back and the adjustable backrest make a big difference for me.
Comfort while handbiking
Because my back is well supported, I sit stable and comfortably while handbiking. This allows me to keep cycling longer without my body starting to protest.
And that makes these rides even more enjoyable.
A terrace as the perfect break
A handbike ride is never really complete for me without a pleasant stop along the way. After cycling for a while, it’s wonderful to sit down at a terrace.
Ordering a drink, maybe some snacks, and simply enjoying the moment. Sitting outside, watching people and taking in the surroundings. These small moments make the day extra valuable to me.
I’m definitely a fair-weather handbiker
I have to admit: I’m a real fair-weather handbiker. My body doesn’t respond well to cold temperatures. During winter my muscles tend to tighten more quickly and my energy levels drop faster.
That’s why I always look forward to the arrival of spring. The first sunny days, nature coming back to life and temperatures slowly rising.
For me, that means the handbike season can start again.
Recharging for a new work week
A ride in nature does more for me than you might think. It helps me clear my mind and keep my body active.
When I return home afterwards, I often feel calmer and more energized. Exactly what I need to start a new work week with fresh energy.
With my handbike, a bit of sunshine and my O4 wheelchair, I can go a long way.
